Islam is commonly characterized as a religion, but this reference to Islam as a religion does not identify the true meaning of the word. Islam is a word that comes from the Arabic root word meaning Submission. That is to say, Islam (Submission) is not just a title; it is a description indicating an individual’s absolute submission to the will of God. More accurately Islam is a state of existence, characterized by the absolute self-surrender and submission to God’s will. By the grace of God, the state of absolute submission can be achieved over time while we learn to completely surrender to the will and commands of our Creator. This kind of submission permits us to have a sense of inner peace and liberates us from all fears and worries, feeling completely safe and protected. Islam (Submission) teaches us that one can only find peace and true happiness in one’s life by totally submitting to the will of Almighty God in heart, soul and good deeds. Therefore, Islam is not just the name of a religion centered on a particular belief or faith in something, but a total submission devoted to God Alone.
